Abu Dhabi is adding another major cultural landmark located on Saadiyat Island, near Saadiyat Cultural District,
Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi, or House of the Arts, is a new Frank Gehry-designed performing arts venue scheduled to open in 2030, with capacity for more than 6,000 people across four performance spaces.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, this ambitious project is being developed by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi).
Architectural Vision: Frank Gehry’s Vision for Dar al Funoon
The late Frank Gehry, a celebrated Canadian-American architect who passed away in December 2025 at the age of 96, envisioned Dar al Funoon as one of his last major creations. Known for his innovative designs, Gehry also conceptualized the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi on the same island.
Dar al Funoon is described as “a living expression of music and performance,” featuring a unique, flowing exterior that resembles fabric draping over the structure. This design draws inspiration from the fluidity of music, the local landscape, and the natural movements of wind and water.

A standout feature of the building is its transparent façade, which invites the public to witness rehearsals and performances, fostering a sense of connection between the audience and the artists. This design choice reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to openness and cultural exchange, making the venue feel alive and engaged with the city.
Venue Specifications: A Home for Every Performance
Dar al Funoon boasts a total capacity of over 6,000 seats across various spaces, making it suitable for a wide range of live entertainment:
- Multipurpose Performance Hall: The centerpiece of the complex, this versatile hall accommodates more than 2,000 seats and is designed for grand productions such as opera, ballet, orchestral concerts, theatre, and award shows, featuring world-class acoustics and an orchestra pit for up to 120 musicians.
- Open-Air Amphitheatre: A stunning 3,500-seat outdoor venue perfect for large-scale festivals and events under the stars.
- Studio Theatre: An intimate 400-seat space dedicated to experimental works and community productions, nurturing new talent.
- Jazz Venue: A cozy 250-seat space optimized for acoustic performances, focusing on the jazz genre.
A Year-Round Cultural Hub
Dar al Funoon is envisioned as a vibrant institution with year-round programming, serving as a permanent home for international productions while supporting long-term artistic residencies, touring partnerships, and co-productions with leading performing arts companies. The goal is to bring renowned artists to Abu Dhabi while providing opportunities for regional and emerging talent.

Amenities and Visitor Experience
In addition to performance spaces, the development will include around 5,000 square meters of food, beverage, and retail options, along with a rooftop terrace for special events, creating a comprehensive cultural and social destination.
Strategic Cultural Significance
This project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, a title it has held since 2021.
Dar al Funoon will add live performance to Saadiyat Island’s extraordinary concentration of cultural institutions, joining Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, with Guggenheim Abu Dhabi scheduled to open on 11 December 2026.
His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasized that this project represents a long-term investment in artistic expression and the future of the cultural ecosystem.

Economic and Community Impact
Beyond its cultural importance, Dar al Funoon is expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits, including job creation, skill development, attracting cultural tourism, and strengthening the creative economy as a driver of growth for Abu Dhabi.
With construction now underway, the countdown to 2030 has officially begun.
When it opens, Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi will stand proudly alongside the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi—two Gehry masterpieces on the same island, one celebrating visual art and the other the art of performance.
What Will Dar al Funoon Mean for Visitors to Abu Dhabi?
For visitors, Dar al Funoon will add a new dimension to experiencing Abu Dhabi’s growing cultural scene. Once it opens in 2030, a day on Saadiyat Island could extend beyond museums and exhibitions into an evening of live performance, from opera and ballet to theatre, jazz and major outdoor events.
Visitors could spend the day exploring attractions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi or Guggenheim Abu Dhabi before experiencing a performance at Dar al Funoon in the evening.

This could make Saadiyat Island an even more compelling destination for cultural travelers. Rather than visiting individual attractions, travelers will have the opportunity to build a complete cultural itinerary combining art, UAE history, natural history, immersive experiences, architecture and live performance within one destination.
For families, educational groups, international delegations, MICE travelers and cultural tour groups, Dar al Funoon could also create new possibilities for customized Abu Dhabi itineraries built around exhibitions, performances and cultural experiences.
As Abu Dhabi continues to expand its cultural offering, Dar al Funoon will help transform Saadiyat Island from a collection of world-class attractions into a destination where visitors can experience different forms of culture throughout the day and into the evening.
