There are destinations you travel to, and then there are places that quietly stay with you. Munnar is unmistakably the latter.
Set high in the Western Ghats of Kerala’s Idukki district, Munnar is a landscape of rolling tea plantations, mist-covered mountains, waterfalls, forests and winding roads.
Kerala Tourism places the Munnar region at elevations of roughly 1,500 to 2,500 metres, with South India’s highest peak, Anamudi, rising nearby to 2,695 metres.

Often described by travelers as the “Kashmir of South India,” Munnar offers something quite different from Kerala’s beaches and backwaters. Here, mornings arrive wrapped in mist, tea gardens stretch across entire hillsides, and the temperature invites you to slow down.
Whether you’re planning a romantic Kerala holiday, a family vacation, a trip with friends or a quiet escape into nature, this Munnar travel guide covers the essentials: how to reach Munnar, the best time to visit, places to see, things to do, how many days to stay and how to plan your itinerary.
How to Reach Munnar
Munnar has no airport or railway station of its own, which means the final part of almost every journey is by road.
That’s not necessarily a disadvantage.
As you climb toward the hills, busy towns gradually give way to plantations, forests, mountain views and waterfalls. The journey becomes part of the Munnar experience.
By Air
Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest major airport to Munnar. Kerala Tourism places it roughly 108 to 119 km away depending on the route used.
The drive generally takes several hours, although actual journey time depends on traffic, weather and road conditions.

For couples, families and international travelers carrying luggage, a private airport transfer is usually the most comfortable option. It also gives you greater flexibility to stop at scenic locations along the route.
If your route permits, waterfalls such as Cheeyappara and Valara can make the journey into the hills part of your first day’s sightseeing.
By Train
Munnar does not have a railway station.
Kerala Tourism identifies Aluva as the nearest railway station at approximately 120 km on one of its current travel-information pages, while Ernakulam is another major rail gateway commonly used for Munnar.

From the railway station, travelers can continue to Munnar by taxi, private vehicle or bus.
By Road
A road trip is arguably the most scenic way to reach Munnar.
Munnar is connected by road with Kochi and other destinations across Kerala and neighboring states. Public buses operate to the hill station, while a private vehicle gives you greater flexibility for sightseeing and stops along the journey.

If Munnar forms part of a longer Kerala itinerary, it can also be combined with destinations such as Kochi, Thekkady, Kumarakom and Alleppey.
Best Time to Visit Munnar
Munnar can offer a different experience depending on when you visit, so there isn’t one perfect season for every traveler.
October to February: For Cool Weather
This is one of the most popular periods for a Munnar holiday.

Cooler conditions are ideal for sightseeing, viewpoints, tea plantation visits, nature experiences and romantic getaways. Early mornings and evenings can feel particularly cool, so carrying a light jacket is sensible.
March to May: For a Summer Hill Escape
As temperatures rise across much of South India, Munnar remains a popular escape to the hills.

This period works particularly well for families traveling during school holidays and visitors who prefer clearer conditions for sightseeing.
June to September: For Monsoon Landscapes
Monsoon reveals an entirely different side of Munnar.
Tea plantations become intensely green, clouds descend over the mountains and waterfalls grow dramatically more powerful.

It’s a beautiful time for landscape lovers and photographers, but heavy rainfall can affect outdoor activities, visibility and road conditions. A flexible itinerary is therefore important.
How Many Days Do You Need in Munnar?
You can see some of Munnar in two days, but trying to squeeze everything into a short stay defeats part of the reason for coming here.
2 Days
Suitable if Munnar is one stop on a larger Kerala itinerary. Concentrate on the principal viewpoints, tea plantations and attractions around town.
3 Days
Our preferred option for most first-time visitors.
Three days gives you enough time to experience Munnar’s major sights without spending your entire holiday rushing from one attraction to another.

4 Days or More
Consider a longer stay if you want to include trekking, Kolukkumalai, Marayoor, adventure activities, photography or simply some downtime at your resort.
For most first-time visitors, two to three nights in Munnar provides a good balance.
